Biotin for Hair Growth

What Is Biotin for Hair Growth?

Biotin for Hair Growth Is Various articles in the internet pertain to biotin supplements that disseminate different facts and opinions. Some say that they acquired one or more side-effects while using the product. On the other hand, some articles explain the beneficial effects of biotin and convince people to use biotin, especially those websites marketing biotin supplements.

But is using biotin supplements really worth it? Will the side-effects of taking biotin supplements outweigh their advantages? Let’s take a closer look…

Biotin, also called Vitamin B7, is one of the Vitamin B Complex which mostly works to convert food into energy and needed for better nerve, cardiovascular, digestive, and metabolic functions. More specifically, biotin is an essential component of certain enzymes in the body that break down fats, carbohydrates, and others.

Biotin is also a said to be a beauty nutrient since it is a major component for healthier hair, skin, and nails. In fact, it is also even sometimes called Vitamin “H” because it is believed to have desirable beneficial effects for the hair. (1, 2,

If you search some hair or beauty products in stores, chances are you will find items with Biotin added to them. That’s how popular biotin is. However, it is believed to be less absorbed in the skin so biotin supplements are already made available in the market.

Aside supplementing biotin from people with biotin deficiency, ordinary people also purchase the product because they believe it helps them have faster and more lustrous hair growth. Other types of buyers are also those who believed to have subclinical deficiency of biotin such as those with hair loss, hair thinning, or skin rashes. (2, 3, 4)

Since biotin maintains and improves healthier hair, would it follow that biotin supplements will do the same for the hair, too? Some market it as a miracle pill that would solve your hair problems such as hair thinning and hair loss.

Aside from improving hair thickness, biotin supplements also claim to reduce nail breakage which also makes sense because hair and nails almost have the same components. (4, 5)

“I admit I had low expectations for this product, but wow, it really worked. I observed it started to fill out my thinning hair. It also helped my hair grow tremendously fast. Luckily, I didn’t have allergic reactions and weight gain while using the supplements. My friends should try this.”

“I could feel it started working after one week. I noticed my hair to be a little healthier, particularly at the ends. It does not work instantly though. It is rather gradual with minimal improvements. It is affordable so I will be continuing to use it and see.”

“I had hair loss for two months. I tried everything and visited so many doctors but results were always negative. Not until I tried using biotin supplements. I could really tell that it works, and I have clearly seen a difference. I use it together with Mane N’ Tail shampoo and conditioner.”

But am I assured? Although there are some people who are satisfied with biotin supplements, this may not be what some people experienced. This is evidenced by several bad reviews about biotin supplements. It even seems that the negative reviews outweigh the positive ones.

Here is one negative review of person taking biotin supplements:

“I experienced my worst pimple breakout when I took the biotin supplements. I know it was the pills that caused that problem because the breakout stopped after I stopped taking them. I will not risk trying it again.”

It is still questionable whether or not biotin could really contribute to hair growth. One small-scale study showed that biotin did not promote hair growth in healthy people, although it strengthened the nails. Additionally, reports of break-outs have been common while using it.

Dr. Jessica Weiser, a board-certified dermatologist said that this could happen because there is an imbalance among the vitamins in the body. This could be explained because another vitamin B complex called Pantothenic Acid or the Vitamin B5 is absorbed in the body using the same receptors as Biotin.

Pantothenic Acid regulated the barrier function of thus skin; thus, preventing breakouts. Too much Biotin in the body decreases Pantothenic Acid absorbed in the body causing acne, pimple breakouts, or rashes. The recommended dietary allowance is just low, 20-30 mcg a day, tremendously smaller than the Biotin pills we have today. (18, 19)

Conclusion:

It is quite evident that the pills work differently on every person- some did enjoy the intended benefits while some suffered undesirable side-effect. It is really up to the person if he wants to take biotin supplements or not.

If he is already aware of the side-effects (cystic acne, pimples, rash) but is still willing to risk having them to get healthier locks which is by the way still not a guarantee, then it is his choice.

However, in my own opinion, what you can do is take biotin, but this time through its natural sources such as almonds, eggs, whole grains, milk, and meat. This is to ensure you get just the proper amount of biotin and not exceeding the daily allowance.
